North American P-51D Mustangs from the 353rd Fighter Group shepherd Boeing B-17s from the 401st Bomb Group, both units of the mighty 8th Air Force, United States Army Air Corps, inbound on a bombing mission over Nazi occupied France during World War Two. "The Liberty Belle", piloted by 1st Lieutenant Robert E. Schillinger, takes the high lead position as he and his wingman sweep the sky for enemy fighters. This painting was commissioned by Lt. Schillinger's daughter in memory of his exploits in World War Two. The artist's father was a waist gunner in one of the B-17s depicted in this painting.
